St Albans' Own East End

Francis Bacon/SRA School

This must be the first school photograph taken of the formative Francis Bacon School.  It began, as so many schools did, in the premises of the former Alma Road Board School.  The picture is probably of 1961 vintage.  Until its opening there had been a serious shortage of grammar school places, and by opening as a mixed school, it satisfied the requirements for both girls and boys on one site.  I count 70 pupils and 6 members of staff.
